Oregon Takes a Step Toward Legalizing Psychedelic Mushrooms

Psilocybin

Oregon has approved language for a ballot measure seeking to make psilocybin, the hallucinogenic substance in psychedelic mushrooms, legal.

The Psilocybin Service Initiative of Oregon measure would diminish penalties for manufacturing, delivering and possessing psilocybin in the state, OPB reports.

The Oregon Psilocybin Society says evidence shows that psilocybin can treat ailments such as anxiety, depression, PTSD and more.

140,000 signatures are required for the ballot measure to advance.

Much like cannabis, the U.S. government classified psilocybin as a controlled substance for Nixon’s war on drugs. Also, like cannabis, researchers are finding that psilocybin has numerous therapeutic applications and should be descheduled for medicinal purposes.
