Oregon to Begin Enhancing Enforcement of State’s Marijuana Regulations

Oregon Marihuana

Oregon lawmakers are thinking ahead of the Trump administration’s potential crackdown on recreational marijuana. A bipartisan group has taken the first steps to enact direct state actions in response to recent comments made by Sean Spicer. These lawmakers want to protect the personal information of those purchasing legal recreational marijuana in the state.

If these lawmakers have their way, the information of those purchasing marijuana would have to be destroyed within 48-hours of the purchase, according to NWI Times. The information to be destroyed includes names, addresses, phone numbers and birth dates. Essentially, any information collected by a recreational marijuana shop for marketing reasons would have to be destroyed.

The first hearing regarding the issue took place this week. The proposal has to be approved by the state’s full Legislature. Following that, the Governor must sign it into law. The governor has already vowed to protect Oregon’s recreational marijuana law against the federal government.

Senator Floyd Prozanski said, “I could see where the federal government would come in and try to gather this information from businesses that have stockpiled it and retained it in their records. I think we as legislators have a duty to protect our citizens.”

Marijuana users, medical or recreational, are not permitted to own firearms. Some lawmakers find that to be a big problem, especially for those that might be federal employees.

Senate Republican Leader Ted Ferrioli said, “When you go to purchase a firearm, you have to fill out a background check, and there’s a specific question about marijuana use on that form. I would hate to think that some misguided effort at the federal level to coordinate client lists that could be confiscated in absence of this (proposal) with the firearms purchase lists.”

The State of Oregon has been very diligent in being a good example of how well legal recreational marijuana can work with proper regulation. It is also working to test age compliance, according to OPB. The Oregon Liquor Control Commission wants to make sure that underage persons are not being sold marijuana. The commission will be testing the processes of retail marijuana shops to ensure that the regulations set forth are being adhered to.
