Oregon Medical Marijuana Dispensaries to Stop Selling Recreational Marijuana

OR Dispensary Sales

The Oregon Health Authority sent a reminder this week to all Oregon medical marijuana dispensaries that they must stop selling recreational marijuana on December 31, 2016. 319 medical marijuana dispensaries participated in early recreational marijuana sales, which began on October 1, 2015.

When the New Year begins, recreational sales can only occur in state-licensed retail marijuana stores, according to KTVZ News 21.

Oregon Medical Marijuana Program manager, Andre Ourso, said, “It is crucial that dispensaries stop selling products to retail customers after Dec. 31, 2016. This is a statutory requirement. Anyone caught selling to retail customers could face serious penalties.”

If a dispensary wishes to continue to sell both medical and recreational marijuana, an additional license is required from the Oregon Liquor Control Commission. It will take time, so the process should be started now. Nothing is automatic as all applications are subjected to the same approval process.

Operating licenses can be suspended or revoked if a medical marijuana dispensary breaks the rules. Civil penalties and/or fines may be imposed.
